Human & Built Environment lab focuses on the interaction between humans and the indoor environment.
Our goals are to provide a pleasant, healthy, and eco-friendly indoor environment in various spaces.
Research activities involve the measurement and analysis of occupants’ physiological and psychological responses to environmental conditions.
Core research areas include thermal comfort, sleep environments, vehicle environments, productivity, and low-energy, sustainable design.
In the climate chamber, individual factors such as sex, age, and metabolic rate are set as experimental variables, and thermal comfort is assessed by measuring physiological indicators such as skin temperature together with subjective thermal comfort responses.
Thermal response measurement in young adults under different metabolic rates
Thermal response measurement in older adults
We investigate how indoor environmental quality influences cognitive performance, concentration, and the perceived productivity of occupants.
Electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement under different work environments
Thermal comfort and productivity assessment in an actual office environment
We collect both physiological measures such as skin temperature and subjective questionnaire responses in vehicle cabins, and develop models that predict occupants' thermal comfort from them.
Evaluation using a thermal manikin
Evaluation with human subjects
We study how the thermal and air quality conditions of a bedroom affect sleep quality, and track the physiological responses that occur during sleep.
Development of Personal Devices for Sleep Quality Improvement
Detection of Thermal Discomfort from Physiological Signals during Sleep
